Apple is already reportedly developing “several successors” to the M1 chip with significant performance improvements that could arrive as early as Spring of next year.Ĭonsidering that most professional apps like the Adobe Creative Suite are not yet optimized for the M1 chip either, waiting for these rumored upgrades will most likely work out in your favor - if you can afford to wait in the first place. More importantly, despite the positive reception, we can’t rule out the fact that these are first-gen products and those are always a gamble in one way or another. However, by opting for the Mac mini, which is $600 cheaper than the MacBook Pro, I can room for these future releases.

If I buy the M1-powered MacBook Pro or MacBook Air today, it won’t be reasonable for me to discard them and upgrade to the new one in mid-2021. A run-of-the-mill laptop no longer fits in my workflow. You see, as I already spend most of the time working from home on the Mac, I now expect my notebook to be a bit more versatile. Living with a Chromebook made me realize the new MacBooks won’t do the trick for me for one reason alone: versatility. For the times I needed to turn to a traditional desktop (or when I’m at home all day), I ended up repurposing the MacBook Pro to power my home office setup, which means it remained always hooked up to a monitor and several computer accessories. I found one in a high-end Chromebook since most of my work lives inside a web browser. While Apple was getting its Mac strategy back in order, I needed a backup workstation to survive my workloads. By the time Apple fixed those fundamental flaws (faulty keyboard and performance hiccups among others), rumors of the new M1 processor began to spurt up.
Apple’s computing division has spent much of the last half a decade patching what has ailed its notebooks since their 2015 revamp. But being a Mac buyer hasn’t been easy these past few years. Fortunately I was able to adjust them with a rough visual calibration to get colour profiles that give a very close match.I had been meaning to replace my six-year-old MacBook Pro for a while. my 2 monitors have slightly different colour quality which was a problem at first. a fairly good looking and unobtrusive monitor monitor is fairly resistant to wobble from work surface vibration monitor could be used as a TV, with HDMI from source device HDMI cable is IMO preferable to older bulky DVI cables and connectors
several menu adjustments for sharpness, brightness, colour etc displayed material also looks good when viewed from the sides and above glossy screen not a problem in my controlled environment colour quality similar to recent Mac displays very good colour quality, possibly because the screen has minimal or no anti-reflection coatings The S2340L does everything I need, most importantly it has excellent sharpness and colour at an attractive price level. I also considered the Dell U2412M which is better quality and has additional features but I decided the extras were not really necessary for me. One of the monitors is driven direct from an HDMI port and the other uses a Mini DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapter to connect to the Thunderbolt connector. These monitors last year were sometimes very inexpensive compared to the U series ($140 compared to $250 U2412M on sale) but unfortunately the price has gone up. A pair of Dell S2340L IPS monitors are connected to my 2011 mini and I like them a lot.
